On May, 28th 1940, during the fighting which preceded the fall of France, about 100 British prisoners-of-war were herded into a barn near the French town of Wormhoudt by a company of Waffen-SS troops commanded by SS-Hauptsturm führer (Captain) Wilhelm Möhnke. The Germans then proceeded to throw hand grenades into the barn and to shoot its occupants. There were about sixteen survivors.
